The SeaCoRe system for large scale kelp aquaculture: a plug-and-play, compatible, open-source system for the propagation and transport of clonal gametophyte cultures

Abstract The future of large-scale kelp aquaculture is standing at a crossroad, with the diverging paths being characterized by two fundamentally different cultivation methods that differ on how well gametophyte reproduction can be controlled. method does not directly control more widely utilized moment, but interest in better controlling growing steadily. Here, we validate bioreactor system overcomes number implementation challenges for this controlled reproductive method, expanding possibility clonal outside expensive laboratory settings. main goals include (i) maintenance clean cultures non-sterile environments over prolonged periods time, (ii) production large numbers juvenile sporophytes, and (iii) effective transportation gametophytes sporophytes. “SeaCoRe system” consists out three parts correspond to these challenges: (1) clone-reactors, (2) clone-inducer, (3) transporter. validation showed delayed Saccharina latissima Alaria esculenta grow reliably 75 days clone-reactors. Initial densities 0.4 mg DW 0.6 gametophtyes mL −1 were optimal S . A , resulting successes 604 422 sporophytes respectively.
